Puducherry, 22nd Oct. Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday for approving a proposal to supply free rice and sugar through ration shops, replacing the previous system of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to beneficiaries’ bank accounts.

At a function launching the distribution of the staples, the LG explained that Chief Minister N Rangasamy had requested the initiative, allowing for 10 kg of rice and 2 kg of sugar to be distributed to cardholders through ration shops.

Kailashnathan noted that during discussions with the Prime Minister, he highlighted the benefits of the new distribution method. He pointed out that cash transfers were sometimes misused for unrelated expenses instead of purchasing the intended goods.

“The Prime Minister found justification for this approach and approved it,” said Kailashnathan. He emphasized that the scheme aims to ensure no one goes hungry, especially ahead of Diwali, and would benefit approximately 6.34 lakh families in the Union Territory.

During the event, Rangasamy, along with other ministers and officials, lauded the initiative, which also included the reopening of all ration shops in the Union Territory after being closed for eight years.
