India must undergo significant transformations in education, manufacturing, energy capacity, and urbanization to achieve its goal of becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047, according to B.V.R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog. Speaking at the Confederation of Indian Industry’s annual summit, Subrahmanyam emphasized that these sectors are critical for India’s transition into a developed nation.
Tailored Development Roadmaps
To ensure inclusive growth, Subrahmanyam announced that by the end of the year, every Indian state and Union Territory will have a customized development roadmap for 2047. These plans aim to align regional strategies with national objectives, addressing local challenges and leveraging unique strengths.
Manufacturing Sector Overhaul
A central focus of India’s development strategy is the transformation of the manufacturing sector. Subrahmanyam highlighted the necessity of increasing manufacturing’s contribution to GDP from the current 15–17% to 25% by 2047. Achieving this target requires an average annual growth rate of 15% in the sector.
To facilitate this growth, the government plans to launch the National Manufacturing Mission in June. This mission will establish a dedicated body with the authority to implement reforms, enhance competitiveness, and capitalize on global supply chain shifts.
Education and Skill Development
Transforming the education system is equally vital. Subrahmanyam stressed the need for an education overhaul that aligns with industry requirements, fostering innovation and equipping the workforce with relevant skills. This initiative aims to reduce the reliance on agriculture for employment and prepare the population for opportunities in manufacturing and other high-value sectors.
Energy Capacity and Urbanization
Enhancing energy capacity and expanding urban infrastructure are also critical components of India’s development agenda. By increasing energy production and improving urban planning, India can support industrial growth and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
Subrahmanyam’s comprehensive approach underscores the interconnectedness of education, manufacturing, energy, and urban development in achieving India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047. The forthcoming National Manufacturing Mission and state-specific development roadmaps represent significant steps toward realizing this ambitious
