In a significant counterintelligence operation, Indian authorities have dismantled a sprawling espionage network allegedly orchestrated by Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The crackdown has led to the arrest of eight individuals across various states, encompassing professions from digital influencers to defense contract workers.
Key Arrests and Allegations
-
Jyoti Malhotra, a 33-year-old travel vlogger from Haryana with a substantial online following, was apprehended for allegedly transmitting sensitive military information to Pakistani handlers. Investigations suggest she maintained contact with ISI operatives, sharing details about Indian Army movements in Haryana and Punjab.
-
Shehzad Wahab, a trader from Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, was arrested by the state’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) for allegedly operating as a Pakistani spy under the guise of cross-border trade. Authorities claim he had direct links to the ISI and was involved in recruiting individuals to expand the spy network.
-
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) detained three contract employees — Vethan Laxman Tandel, Akshay Ravi Naik, and Abhilash P.A. — stationed at naval bases in Karnataka’s Karwar and Kerala’s Kochi. They are accused of leaking sensitive information about Indian naval operations to Pakistani intelligence operatives.

In Punjab, two daily-wage laborers, Palak Sher Masih and Suraj Masih, were arrested for allegedly sharing sensitive information about Army and Air Force bases in Amritsar with the ISI. The duo reportedly received payments for the information and were connected to an inmate in Amritsar Central Jail, who facilitated their contact with Pakistani handlers.
Social Media: A Tool for Espionage
These arrests reflect how espionage operations are adapting to the digital age. Individuals with social media influence, such as vloggers, are increasingly being used to gather and transmit strategic information under the radar. Investigators believe some suspects were recruited through platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, and Telegram.
Growing Threat to National Security
The coordinated efforts of ISI operatives across multiple Indian states point to a well-structured spy network aimed at gathering defense intelligence. Indian agencies are now on high alert, as further arrests may be imminent. Security experts have urged stricter background checks for workers at sensitive defense facilities and increased cyber surveillance.
