VHP Slams Delhi Police for Denying Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra in Jahangirpuri, Calls It ‘Appeasement of Extremists’

New Delhi: The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has strongly criticized the Delhi Police’s decision to deny permission for a Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra in Jahangirpuri, terming it a “surrender before Islamic extremists” and a “disrespect to Hindu sentiments.”

Reacting to the official order issued by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, North-West District, VHP National Spokesperson Vinod Bansal called the move deeply unfortunate. He questioned how, in the national capital, a religious procession could be banned merely because of a previous attack by “Islamic jihadists” — an incident in which, he alleged, the police failed to act decisively.

“It is a matter of grave concern that the Delhi Police has prohibited a peaceful Shobha Yatra on Hanuman Jayanti at the last moment, even though the Hindu community had informed authorities a month in advance and made all preparations,” said Bansal in a statement on Friday. “This appears to be a pre-emptive surrender to fundamentalist forces who attacked such processions earlier. Instead of acting against the attackers, restrictions are being imposed on the victims. Is this justice?”

He warned that such decisions embolden extremist elements and damage the image of a police force known for bravery. “Due to the indecisive and Hindu-averse attitude of some Delhi Police officials, the reputation of this courageous force is being tarnished. The ban at the last hour is not only condemnable but also an encouragement to radical elements,” he said.

In the official order dated April 11, the police cited “sensitivity” and “law and order concerns” in the Jahangirpuri area as reasons for denying permission. However, it allowed for the religious celebration to take place within temple premises.

Bansal urged Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora and Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena to immediately review the decision and ensure the constitutional right of Hindus to observe their religious festivals peacefully.

“This is not just a question of one yatra,” Bansal added. “It is about setting a precedent — will the State stand with those who disrupt peace, or with law-abiding citizens wishing to celebrate their faith?”
