LaLiga appeal CSD decision which allows Barcelona to play Dani Olmo

The three-way dispute involving FC Barcelona, LaLiga and Spain’s Supreme Sports Council, Consejo Superior de Deportes (CSD), over the registrations of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor took another turn after LaLiga appealed against the decision to allow the players to play.

Olmo, signed from RB Leipzig last summer, and Victor were only registered because of an injury to Andreas Christensen, as Barcelona struggled to meet stricter financial fair play rules. Their registrations lapsed before the start of the January transfer window. And though Barcelona claimed they had shown a new source of funds by selling corporate boxes at the under-renovation Nou Camp, LaLiga says there is no record of it in their accounts.

According to Jose Manuel Uribes, the CSD president, the players could play only because of a procedural error on the part of LaLiga. “It is not a minor issue,” said Uribes. “In law, procedure is key. If the proper channels aren’t followed, the decisions lose their validity.”

“We don’t have the authority to override LaLiga or RFEF on financial fair play. Our ruling is strictly about procedure.”

Olmo, a product of Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy, left the club at 16 to play for Dinamo Zagreb and then Leipzig. With so much controversy surrounding his registration, he has played just 28 times this season, scoring eight goals.
