No Hardik Pandya as Team India’s 15-member squad has been announced by the men’s selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan. But Jasprit Bumrah is back, subject to fitness clearance.
All three matches will be played in Delhi between September 13 and 17.
Shreyas Iyer will lead the side, while Tilak Varma is his deputy. Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan are the two wicketkeeping options, with Sanju making a comeback after missing the Zimbabwe tour.
Apart from Bumrah, three other players — Nitish Kumar Reddy (hamstring injury), Washington Sundar (quadriceps injury) and Harshit Rana (hamstring injury) — are to be available subject to fitness clearance. Bumrah was nursing a left knee injury.
There is also a boost for India with the return of Varun Chakravarthy, who has recovered from a hamstring injury. Hardik, meanwhile, has not been included after reportedly suffering a fresh leg injury during the rehabilitation process at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
India’s squad: Shreyas Iyer [C], Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Sanju Samson [WK], Ishan Kishan [WK], Tilak Varma [VC], Shivam Dube, Nitish Kumar Reddy*, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar*, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah*, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana*
NOTE: *Subject to fitness clearance
Despite being the No. 1-ranked T20I side in the world according to the ICC rankings, India have struggled in the format recently.
The Men in Blue head into this series after a 3-0 away T20I series win over Zimbabwe. Before that, however, they had gone seven consecutive games without a win — losing twice to Ireland in their lair and four times to England in England, while one match was abandoned due to rain.
