It is now all but clear that Misbah-ul-Haq’s decision to resign from the Pakistan men’s selection committee is connected to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issuing a show-cause notice to the selectors. The letter, signed by Sumair Ahmad Syed, the PCB’s chief operating officer, was sent on 31 August. RevSportz has accessed the show-cause letter.
In the notice, the selection committee was asked to explain the selection of Muhammad Rizwan and Imam-ul-Haq for Pakistan’s ongoing tour of England for a three-Test series. After badly losing the first two Tests, both players, along with five others, have been sent back home. The PCB has also replaced their red-ball coach, Sarfaraz Ahmed, with white-ball boss Mike Hesson for the third Test at Edgbaston, starting on 9 September.
“This Notice is being issued in connection with the selection of Mr. Muhammad Rizwan and Mr. Imam ul Haq (the ‘Players’) for inclusion in the Test Match squad of the Pakistan Men’s National Cricket Team for its Test tours to the West Indies and England in 2026 (the ‘Series’),” stated the show-cause letter.
“2. You, being a member of the Selection Committee, participated in the meeting of the Selection Committee held on 2nd June, 2026 of which minutes were submitted on 1 July, 2026, wherein you were entrusted with the responsibility and authority to consider and select players for selection to the Pakistan Men’s National Test Squad for the aforementioned Series.
“3. Pursuant thereto, and upon your recommendation, the following players were shortlisted for inclusion in the squad:
(i) Mr. Muhammad Rizwan; and
(ii) Mr. Imam ul Haq
“4. As advised by the Competent Authority, you are hereby requested to provide a written explanation regarding the basis and rationale for the selection of the said two players, including the relevant selection criteria, performance considerations and any other factors taken into account during the selection process.
“5. The explanation should clearly outline the reasons for their selection and the process followed in arriving at the final decision.”

The PCB asked the selectors to respond to the notice within a day.
“6. You are hereby directed to submit your written explanation to the PCB within twenty-four (24) hours of receipt of this Notice. The response must clearly and unequivocally address each of the matters set out herein,” it said.
The letter added: “You are, therefore, advised to treat this Notice as urgent and of utmost importance and ensure strict compliance within the stipulated timeframe.”
Misbah, meanwhile, has also reportedly decided to step down from his role as batting consultant at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore.
