The 2026 Sher-E-Punjab T20 season began explosively on Sunday, as the opening combination of Amritsar Soormas, Abhishek Sharma and Sahaj Dhawan, tore into the Mohali Kings bowling attack and raced to a 100-run opening partnership in just 31 deliveries. The pair brought up their 50-run partnership in just 21 balls before accelerating further with boundaries flowing at regular intervals.
Dhawan smashed a whirlwind 45 off just 18 balls, striking at 250 and hitting seven fours and two towering sixes. At the end of five overs, the Soormas reached hundred runs without the loss of a single wicket, with Abhishek unbeaten on 49 off 16 balls and Dhawan on 45 off 17.
The opening pair had put together 100 runs from just 31 deliveries, setting the tone for a blistering start of the tournament. They both faced the deliveries of Ayush Goyal, Nipun Pandita, Manpreet Johal and Ramandeep Singh who provided Mohali with their first breakthrough at 5.1, with Nipun taking the catch to dismiss Dhawan for 45.
However, Abhishek continued to smash boundaries as he brought up his half-century in just 17 balls before eventually falling for a stunning 77 off 26 deliveries. Harpreet Brar’s delivery dismissed Abhishek and his innings included six fours and seven sixes, as he struck at an extraordinary strike rate of 296.15.
This stellar opening partnership ultimately provided the perfect platform for Amritsar Soormas, with Abhishek and Dhawan’s 100-run stand coming in just 31 balls and setting up a dominant start to their Sher-E-Punjab T20 campaign. While the Soormas did eventually fall short against Mohali Kings despite the explosive start, the opening partnership remained one of the brightest moments in the campaign opener.
In the post-match comments, Abhishek also acknowledged that his side was only a few runs short of what could have been a winning total, and he further added that it was unusual for a captain on that pitch to feel that even 260 runs was not enough.
For Dhawan, the opening game of the new Sher-E-Punjab T20 season was an opportunity to make an impression of his own, and accumulating 45 runs from just 17 balls at the end of five overs was a statement of intent from a young opener.
Amritsar Soormas posted 258 all out in 19.5 overs, but Mohali Kings chased down the target in 19.3 overs to win by five wickets.
