The Equestrian Park in Setagaya, Tokyo, is a venue where Olympic history, equestrian sport and city life come together. Opened in 1940, the historic venue has been part of Tokyo’s Olympic story and will now host equestrian events at the 2026 Asian Games.
After undergoing renovation in 2023, the venue will once again welcome top equestrian athletes for the Asian Games 2026, hosting events such as dressage, eventing and jumping.
A venue with Olympic history
The park was established on September 29, 1940, by the Japan Racing Association. It was originally built to prepare Japanese riders and horses for the 1940 Olympics.
The Games were cancelled because of World War II, but the venue continued to play an important role in the development of equestrian sport in Japan. The park was also used as a training centre for future jockeys until Japan’s Horseracing School opened in 1982.
The venue was linked to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, but the equestrian events were moved to Karuizawa in Nagano Prefecture because of technical issues. The park finally hosted Olympic equestrian events when Tokyo staged the Games in 2020.
Before those Games, the park underwent a major renovation. It was closed to the public from 2016, while some operations were moved to Utsunomiya. The park reopened in Setagaya in 2023 with upgraded sporting and community facilities.
Horse sport in the heart of Tokyo
The Equestrian Park is located in Setagaya Ward, one of Tokyo’s largest and most populated areas.
Setagaya is known for its residential neighbourhoods, educational institutions and large green spaces. The Equestrian Park adds something different to the urban landscape, bringing an international-level equestrian facility into a busy part of Tokyo.
The park is owned by the Japan Racing Association and is also open to the public outside major competitions. It is popularly known as Horse Park.
The venue can host major international competitions, while local residents can also enjoy its surrounding green spaces and horse-related activities.
A venue with a long Olympic legacy
The Equestrian Park has a permanent main stadium with a capacity of around 9,300 spectators.
The venue also hosts national and regional dressage and show-jumping competitions when the Asian Games and other major championships are not taking place. Seasonal community events also give the venue a role beyond competitive sport.

For a venue that was originally built for an Olympic Games that never took place, the Equestrian Park has had a remarkable journey.
More than 80 years after its establishment, it has become one of Japan’s most recognised equestrian venues and has already hosted Olympic competition. Now, the Asian Games will add another chapter to its story.
For spectators, the venue offers more than a chance to watch dressage, jumping and eventing. It is also an opportunity to experience a historic sporting space within one of the world’s busiest cities.
How to reach the venue
Equestrian Park can be reached by train and bus. Public transport is recommended during the Asian Games due to road and parking restrictions around the venue.
By train: Take the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line to Sakurashinmachi Station. From the North Exit, the park is within walking distance.
From Shibuya: Take the Tokyu Den-en-toshi Line from Shibuya to Sakurashinmachi.
By bus: From Shibuya Station West Exit, take Tokyu Bus Shibu23 or Shibu24 and get off at Nodai-mae, located near the park entrance.
From Chitose-Funabashi: Take a bus towards Shibuya via Nodai-mae and get off at the Nodai-mae stop.
