HM Amit Shah Reviews Siliguri Corridor Security

Siliguri, 22nd Aug: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday reviewed the security of the strategically important Siliguri Corridor, directing central and state agencies to strengthen security, accelerate critical infrastructure projects and prevent illegal immigration and encroachments.

The review meeting was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Army, BSF, SSB and RPF, along with the Chief Secretary and DGP of West Bengal. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari also participated.

The Multi Agency Centre’s Standing Focus Group on Siliguri Corridor presented an assessment of security measures undertaken so far and recommendations for further strengthening the corridor.

Shah reviewed the status of infrastructure projects considered critical to the security of the corridor and directed the concerned agencies to complete pending works within fixed timelines.

Focus on Border Security

The Home Minister stressed the need for a quadrangular approach to border security and directed all agencies to implement it comprehensively.

He also called for greater institutional presence in the corridor, asking agencies to establish more of their institutions in the region. The security of vital installations was reviewed, with directions issued to take all necessary measures to protect them.

Shah further directed authorities to ensure that the Siliguri Corridor remains free from encroachments and stressed the need for effective measures to prevent illegal immigration.

Issues concerning PIO activities, demographic changes and border affairs were also discussed during the meeting.

Strengthening North Bengal’s Security Ecosystem
Shah suggested that the West Bengal government explore the possibility of opening more Sainik Schools in North Bengal. He also called for increasing the number of senior NCC cadets in the region.

The Home Minister urged the state government to strengthen the institutions of Civil Defence and Home Guards in the Siliguri Corridor.

Shah reiterated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government remains committed to making the security of the strategically vital Siliguri Corridor impregnable.
