Patna, 20th Aug: Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday announced the approval of 11,18,937 pucca houses for poor families in Bihar under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), with a total allocation of ₹13,427 crore.
Addressing a state-level PMAY programme in Patna in the presence of Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary and senior state ministers, Chouhan said the initiative would provide not only housing but also dignity, security and improved living conditions for economically weaker families.
“A pucca house is not merely a structure of brick and cement; it is a symbol of dignity and confidence for an entire family,” the Union Minister said.
Reviewing the progress of the housing scheme, Chouhan said that 24.30 lakh houses have been approved for Bihar over the past two years, involving an expenditure of ₹29,164 crore. He said the figures reflected the government’s commitment to ensuring that development benefits reach eligible beneficiaries through transparent implementation.
The Minister also announced that the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) will now be implemented in Bihar, providing farmers with insurance coverage against crop losses caused by floods, droughts, excessive rainfall and other natural calamities. He described the move as a significant step towards strengthening farmers’ financial security.
Highlighting the government’s focus on agriculture, Chouhan said the Centre and the Bihar government are working together to make farming more resilient through improved procurement systems, technology adoption and risk protection measures.
The Union Minister also announced plans to establish She-Marts across districts to create dedicated marketplaces for products manufactured by Lakhpati Didis, Jeevika Didis and women Self-Help Groups (SHGs). He said improved market access, along with better product development, packaging and branding, would enhance women’s incomes and promote rural entrepreneurship.
Commending Bihar’s progress in digitising agriculture, Chouhan said the state has already generated 53.83 lakh Farmer Identity Cards, which will help ensure faster and more transparent delivery of government benefits to eligible farmers.
Describing roads, housing and agriculture as the three pillars of rural development, the Minister said improved connectivity, secure housing and stronger farm incomes would play a key role in transforming Bihar’s villages and accelerating the state’s development.
Slams Congress over ‘Vande Mataram’
During his address, Chouhan also slammed the Congress over its reported decision to sing only a portion of Vande Mataram, calling the national song a symbol of India’s freedom movement and national pride. He alleged that the move was driven by vote-bank politics and asserted that Vande Mataram should be sung in its entirety, saying there could be no compromise on issues linked to national identity.
The programme was attended by several Union and state ministers, elected representatives, women beneficiaries and government officials.
