India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand advanced to the women’s doubles round of 16 with a convincing straight-games win over USA’s Lauren Lam and Allison Lee on Day 2 of the BWF World Championships in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The Indian pair started strongly, taking an 8-2 lead and maintaining control despite a brief fightback from their opponents. After India moved to 11-9, Treesa and Gayatri raised their intensity to restore their advantage and closed out the opening game 21-15.

The second game followed a similar pattern. India led 7-4 before extending their advantage to 11-4 at the interval. They continued their impressive performance, moving to 15-8 and then 19-12 before sealing the game 21-12 in 38 minutes. The victory booked their place in the round of 16.

For Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi, their campaign ended in disappointment on Court 2. The Indian pair struggled against Bulgaria’s Gabriela Stoeva and Stefani Stoeva, losing the opening game 7-21. They showed greater fight in the second game, cutting the deficit to 11-13 after trailing 5-12, but could not complete the comeback and eventually lost 14-21.

Earlier, there was heartbreak in the mixed doubles as the newly formed Indian pair of Ashith Surya and Amrutha Pramuthesh suffered a narrow defeat against Turkey’s Emre Sonmez and Yasemen Bektas.

Ashith and Amrutha took the opening game 21-16 and looked on course for a memorable debut. However, the Turkish pair edged a dramatic second game 30-29 before clinching another tight third game 24-22 to win the match.
