What could be the first thought that flashes in the mind while reading the words, India are set to take on England (or Great Britain) in a hockey game? It would be about all those riveting contests in the past. Over a period of time, both teams have played out enough humdingers, be it in the Olympics, World Cup, or Commonwealth Games. It isn’t often that you end up witnessing one-sided affairs when these two teams lock horns.
The recent encounter between the two sides at the Wegener Hockey Stadium in the 2026 World Cup may not have reached the heights of those previous ones, but it certainly had enough thrills and spills. At one point, India led 2-1 before slipping to a 2-4 defeat. It was almost like a game of two halves, where India looked the better side during the initial stages before England made a sterling comeback in the last couple of quarters.
So, what could have gone wrong for India? The Asian nation perhaps pushed back a little too much into their side of the pitch. That is not how it started, though, as India aimed for fluid passing in the midfield and enough circle penetrations. England, however, gave a fitting riposte on the back of Stuart Rushmere combining with the dangerous Nicholas Bandurak to net a goal. Rushmere, who plays for Surbiton Hockey Club, is renowned for his aerial-ball control and high-pace transition. On the given day, he was arguably England’s best player, alongside Bandurak.
Harmanpreet Singh, via a penalty-corner conversion, and the trio of Hardik Singh, Abhishek Nain and Dilpreet Singh blended together to give India the much-needed lead. At half-time, India clearly had more possession and seemed incisive. Unfortunately, they went into a shell when the game resumed, and that likely turned out to be the bugbear. England, on the other hand, used the wings to good effect.
With India increasingly looking frustrated, Nilakanta Sharma made an error and was shown the yellow card. In a nutshell, that mistake summed up India’s game of two halves. Craig Fulton, the India head coach, though, had a slightly different point of view about why and how his team ended up on the losing side. He said, “The first half was good. We got PCs on the counter-attack and came back nicely with a bit more control. In the third quarter, our defence was not as good as it was supposed to be.”
