Rod Tucker and Sharfuddoula Saikat were on the elevator — the two on-field umpires in the Galle Test, an Australian and a Bangladeshi. On a normal day, they probably would have walked through, inviting just a cursory glance. But Sunday was different.

Galle and Darwin in Australia are about 3,500 miles apart. The face-twitching trepidation of Pat Cummins & Co. against the vibrancy of Najmul Hossain Shanto’s troops Down Under didn’t have a trickle-down effect in the Orient. The two umpires shared a laugh and, on their way to the ground, they bumped into Rishabh Pant and Sarfaraz Khan. More laughter followed.

Near the Indian dressing room, close to where the photographers are stationed and within earshot, Ravindra Jadeja and Sitanshu Kotak, the two Saurashtra boys, were talking about Bangladesh’s historic Test win. They were joined by Adrian le Roux, the team’s strength coach.

On the dressing-room balcony, Gautam Gambhir was deep in conversation with Kuldeep Yadav, while the Karnataka boys — KL Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal and Prasidh Krishna — engaged themselves in a fun chat. At the time of going to print, 250 minutes of play had been lost on Day 2 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka. The players and the support staff used the downtime well.
