Divya Deshmukh (PC- Chessbase India)

The fifth round of the Cairns Cup took place on August 14 and was a tame day for India. R Vaishali and Koneru Humpy faced each other in a match that ended in a draw.

The game started with both players utilizing their pawns and developing their pieces. At the beginning, neither player seemed to have a clear advantage. The game reached an important moment when the queens were exchanged. Humpy attempted to threaten Vaishali’s position by pushing a pawn forward, but Vaishali was able to stop it, and the players kept exchanging pieces.

Eventually, the game reached an endgame where both players had fewer pieces and heavily relied on their rooks, bishops, pawns and kings. However, Vaishali attempted to apply pressure and activated her rook to give repeated checks.

Humpy handled the pressure well despite facing multiple checks from Vaishali, and the game ended in a draw.
The game between Divya Deshmukh and Bibisara Assaubayeva also ended in a draw. Divya opened the game by moving her kingside pawn forward, and in response, Assaubayeva moved the pawn in front of her queen. Both players attempted to fight for control of the centre of the board.

Assaubayeva dealt calmly with the pressure, and the players exchanged multiple pieces. A few moves later, both queens became extremely active and kept moving back and forth, which eventually resulted in a draw. With no clear attack on the king, the game ended after 19 moves.

Divya is currently in fifth spot in the standings, with her and Assaubayeva sharing three points. Humpy is in eighth spot with two points, while Vaishali remains ninth with 1.5 points, with four more rounds of the tournament still left.
