Bhind, 12th Aug: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped and raped in front of her minor brother by a man known to her family in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district, police said. The accused has been arrested within 24 hours of the incident.
The incident occurred on Tuesday in the Mehgaon police station area when the Class 4 student was returning home from school with her 11-year-old brother, a Class 6 student.
According to the information provided, the 21-year-old accused allegedly stopped the siblings and offered to drop them home on his motorcycle. Instead, he allegedly took them to a secluded location and assaulted the girl in front of her brother.
When the boy reportedly tried to intervene, the accused allegedly assaulted him as well before fleeing the spot, leaving the siblings behind.
The girl subsequently became unconscious. Her brother ran home and informed the family, following which relatives took her to a hospital. Medical examination confirmed the alleged sexual assault, after which the family approached Mehgaon police.
Bhind Superintendent of Police Suraj Verma said multiple police teams were formed following the complaint. The accused, who is a resident of the same village and was known to the family, was arrested in less than 24 hours. Police are also examining his criminal antecedents.
The Bhind incident comes six days after another alleged crime against a schoolgirl in Narsinghpur’s Gotegaon area.
According to the information provided, a Class 3 girl was allegedly taken on a motorcycle by her 28-year-old neighbour, who reportedly told her he would drop her home. He allegedly took her to a forested area, where she was sexually assaulted and strangled to death.
Narsinghpur Superintendent of Police Rishikesh Meena formed multiple teams, following which the accused was arrested within 24 hours of the girl’s body being recovered.
The incidents come amid concerns over crimes against children in India. According to NCRB data cited in the information, 1.87 lakh cases of crimes against children were registered in 2024, nearly 6 per cent higher than in 2023.
Cases registered under the POCSO Act accounted for 69,191 cases, around 37 per cent of the total, involving 70,132 child victims.
More than 44,000 cases were registered under Sections 4 and 6 of the POCSO Act, relating to penetrative and aggravated penetrative sexual assault.
