The Rotterdam Dockers took their first big step towards the inaugural season of the European T20 Premier League (ETPL) as they unveiled their jersey at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai on Tuesday.
The event brought together some big names from the worlds of sport and entertainment, with ETPL co-owner Abhishek Bachchan, Rotterdam Dockers co-owners John Abraham and Jonty Rhodes, founder and managing director Madhukar Shree, and founding investor Krish Ramineni in attendance.
While the jersey was the centre of attention, the conversations around the franchise went beyond what the players will wear on the field.
Ramineni spoke about artificial intelligence and the possibilities it can create for sports and fan engagement. With technology increasingly becoming a part of how supporters consume and interact with sport, his comments offered a glimpse into the kind of experience the Dockers hope to build around their team.
John Abraham, meanwhile, spoke about his long-standing connection with sport. His involvement with the Rotterdam Dockers also underlines how the franchise is looking to bring
together different sporting communities as it enters the European cricket space.
Rhodes spoke about the significance of the ETPL and the opportunity it presents for cricket to grow in a new market.
The former South African cricketer, who has spent decades around the game, also provided one of the most entertaining moments of the event.
“Firstly, I used to think that I am the father of cricket, but now I feel like I am the grandfather,” Rhodes said with a smile.
With the jersey now unveiled, the Rotterdam Dockers have put their identity out there. The next step is taking that identity onto the field when the inaugural ETPL season gets underway.
