Ten years after Neeraj Chopra put Indian javelin on the global map with a historic gold at the World U20 Championships, another Indian has stood on the same podium.
This time, it is the 19-year-old Ashish Yadav .
The Uttar Pradesh javelin thrower landed silver in the men’s javelin at the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, ending the long wait with a best effort of 74.09m in the final at the Hayward Field. The medal also opens India’s account in the medal tally.
Ashish qualified for the World U20 final with a 69.87m, topping his group and second overall behind South African Jan-Hendrik Heysons, who won gold with a World U20 leading 80.50m. Meanwhile, Dominica’s Addison James claimed bronze with 73.89m, a U20 national record.
He began the proceedings in the final with 69.96m before finding his best throw in the third round that flew 74.09m. That effort saw him taking second place.
His remaining valid throws saw him crossing 70m (72.31m and 70.62m) were not enough to replace Heysons from the podium.
On the other hand, T. Dharanidharan finished sixth with 72.35m, giving India two athletes inside the top six.
Ashish’s silver lining made him only the second Indian to win a javelin medal at the World U20 Championships, following Chopra’s historic gold in Bydgoszcz in 2016, where he registered the World U20 record and Championship record with a monstrous 86.48m at the age of 18.
The 2007 born Uttar Pradesh thrower, got his breakthrough season with a victory at the Indian Open Throws Competition in Patiala in March, with a personal best throw of 74.49m.
He followed that performance with a 72.27m throw for third place at the Indian Athletics Series in Ludhiana. At the National Junior U20 Athletics Federation Competition in Tumakuru, Ashish again crossed 73m, throwing 73.12m to finish second behind Rohan Yadav, who won with 73.37m.
Ashfaq Finishes Eighth
Promising quarter-miler Mohammed Ashfaq finished eighth in the men’s 400m final at the World Athletics U20 Championships, clocking 46.20s.
The 19-year-old began his campaign with a stunning 45.81s in the heats, shattering the Indian U20 national record. He followed it with 46.00s in the semifinals.
USA’s Jayden DeLeon took the gold, clocking an impressive 44.47s to set a new championship record, finishing ahead of his compatriot and rising global sensation Quincy Wilson, who had been the fastest qualifier for the final. Wilson took silver in 44.62s, while South Africa’s rising star Leendert Koekemoer claimed bronze in 44.96s.
It was the first time in World U20 Championships history that the podium saw three sub 45s timings.
