Indian track and field is riding on momentum at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with two silver medals on the first two days of athletics action in Glasgow.
First came high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, who shone under pressure to secure a silver medal in the men’s high jump. Riding high on confidence after clearing a new national record last month, the 31-year-old from Maharashtra navigated a competitive field to open India’s podium account on the track and field.
Before the applause could fade, distance runner Gulveer Singh produced a brilliant run. The challenges of running under heavy downpours and rain-soaked track at Scotstoun Stadium didn’t deter the Naib Subedar who ran a tactical race in the men’s 10,000m. Staying in mix for most of the race avoiding the head wind, the national record holder unleashed an impressive final kick to snatch silver in 27:49.78. In doing so, he became the first Indian man ever to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event, keeping the African powerhouses at bay.
The spotlight now shifts to India’s best track and field bet in Glasgow, Murali Sreeshankar, as he will be in action in the men’s long jump final tonight after qualifying for the final with a jump of 8.01m in his first attempt on Monday.
The 2022 Birmingham silver medallist enters the long jump runway carrying the form of his life. Sreeshankar has shown incredible consistency since his return from a career-threatening patella tendon rupture.
In the 2026 season, across five meets so far, Sreeshankar has crossed the eight-metre barrier in every single outing which included an impressive 8.38 metres jump at the National Inter-State Championships, recording the best jump in Asia and second best among the Commonwealth nations this year.
“I feel I’m in the best shape of my life, especially this season and I’ll definitely be going for the gold,” said the Palakkad born, who has completed 60 jumps over 8m last month.
His biggest challenge is expected to come from former world champion Tajay Gayle. Alongside him, compatriot and NCAA Indoor champion Lokesh Sathyanathan, who has personal and season best of 8.21m, will also look for a podium finish.
