The countdown to the 2026 FIDE World Championship has begun, with reigning champion Gukesh Dommaraju set to defend his title against Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva, Switzerland, from November 25 to December 15.
The match will be played over 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points lifting the title. If the scores are level at 7-7 after the classical games, the champion will be decided through rapid and, if required, blitz tie-breaks.
This will be a historic contest. Both Gukesh and Sindarov will be 20 when the match begins, making it the youngest World Championship match in chess history. It also represents the rise of a new generation, with two of the game’s brightest young stars fighting for the biggest prize.
On current form, Sindarov has the edge. The Uzbek grandmaster has enjoyed a remarkable run, winning the 2025 FIDE World Cup and following it up with victory at the 2026 Candidates Tournament to earn his shot at the world title. A long unbeaten streak in classical chess has seen him climb into the world’s top five and establish himself as one of the most in-form players on the circuit.
Gukesh’s road to Geneva has been more challenging. Since becoming the youngest undisputed world champion by defeating Ding Liren in Singapore in 2024, the Indian Grandmaster has found results harder to come by. A disappointing Norway Chess campaign and a drop in his live rating mean he enters the match without the momentum his challenger enjoys.
However, unlike tournaments, a title match is a battle of preparation, patience and mental strength. Players have time to adapt, recover and respond over multiple games. These are qualities Gukesh displayed throughout his championship-winning campaign in 2024, when he kept his composure under pressure and seized his chances at the right moments.
There is another reason not to read too much into recent results. Defending champions often spend months preparing specifically for the World Championship, keeping opening ideas and match strategies away from public view. Gukesh has also beaten Sindarov in their most recent meeting at Super Rapid Poland earlier this year, a result that will give him confidence heading into Geneva.
While Sindarov carries the momentum, Gukesh has the experience of winning a World Championship match. That makes this clash one of the most eagerly awaited title contests in recent years.
