The BCCI is set to appoint Subhadeep Ghosh as the new fielding coach for the Indian team. The change comes as the squad prepares for their upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka in August, which will serve as Ghosh’s first major assignment in his new role.
Ghosh will take over the reins from T Dilip, who had been an integral part of the Indian coaching staff since 2021. While Dilip had previously earned a contract extension ahead of last year’s Test series against England, his tenure officially concluded following India’s recent white-ball tour of the UK.
The BCCI’s decision not to renew Dilip’s contract stems from a comprehensive review of the team’s fielding performances, which have faced mounting criticism in recent months. Seeking a much-needed reset to address these below-par standards, the Board opted to bring in fresh perspective and leadership.
Subhadeep Ghosh brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience to the national set-up. A former first-class cricketer who represented both Assam and Railways, Ghosh has spent years transitioning his on-field knowledge into an impressive coaching portfolio. He is no stranger to the demands of international cricket. Over the past few years, he has played pivotal roles in various Indian national squads.
Appointed in 2020, he was instrumental in preparing the women’s squad for crucial international tours. He guided the fielding efforts of the India U-19 team during their World Cup campaign in South Africa. Most notably, Ghosh served as the fielding coach for the Men in Blue during the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, where the team secured a gold medal. He was also with the team during the recently concluded tour of Zimbabwe.
With a diverse coaching background that spans junior, women’s, domestic, and franchise cricket, Ghosh is well-equipped to tackle the fielding challenges currently facing the senior men’s team.
