New Delhi: Delhi Police has dismissed viral social media claims that Tamil actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thalapathy Vijay visited Jantar Mantar to support an ongoing student protest, clarifying that the circulating video is not from the protest site.
The clarification came after a video showing Vijay seated inside a vehicle surrounded by a large crowd of fans gained widespread attention online. Several social media users falsely claimed that the actor had travelled to Jantar Mantar in support of students participating in the demonstration.
Viral video sparks speculation
The video quickly went viral across multiple social media platforms, with posts alleging that Vijay had extended his support to the student protest in New Delhi.
The claims gained traction as users shared the clip with captions suggesting that the actor’s presence had boosted the ongoing agitation.
However, no official evidence supported the claim, prompting Delhi Police to issue a fact-check.
Delhi Police issues fact-check
Responding through its official X account, Delhi Police categorically rejected the viral claim and urged the public not to circulate misleading information.
In its statement, the police said:
“Fact check: This information is false. The video being circulated is not from Jantar Mantar, New Delhi. Please do not spread or amplify false or misleading information.”
The clarification confirmed that the video had no connection with the ongoing protest at Jantar Mantar and warned social media users against sharing unverified content.
Appeal against misinformation
The incident highlights the growing challenge of misinformation on social media during high-profile public events.
Authorities have repeatedly advised users to verify information through official sources before sharing videos or claims that could create confusion or spread false narratives.
Police have stressed that misleading posts can divert public attention and complicate law enforcement efforts during sensitive situations.
