ENG vs IND – “Expected more from lower middle-order batters”: Shubman Gill expressed disappointment after Cardiff loss

India captain Shubman Gill admitted his side failed to make the most of a strong position after England registered a four-wicket win in the second ODI in Cardiff, on Thursday. With this win, England levelled the series 1-1.

During the post-match presentation, Gill reflected on the defeat after a promising start. “Quite disappointing,” he said. “ We thought 300-310 would be a good total after 25 overs when we were in a good position, but we lost too many wickets in the middle overs.

“[On the collapse] Our tailenders are not the best batsmen, but we expected more from the lower middle-order batters and they were not able to capitalise on their starts.”

India looked comfortable, with Virat Kohli (65) and Shreyas Iyer (66) leading the charge. However, the middle order failed to contribute as Ishan Kishan (1), Washington Sundar (2), Axar Patel (1) and Shivam Dube (0) fell in quick succession, restricting India to 233 all out inside 45 overs.

Gill also spoke about the performance of Washington during a crucial phase of the game. “He is a key part of our team. Maybe it would have played a part, squeezing in the pressure. We had to bowl our main bowlers throughout the innings. I don’t think it would have made a huge difference because the ball was doing more for the fast bowlers, but when you lose a key player, there is some momentum loss,” he said.

The series decider will be played at Lord’s on Sunday.
