India had mixed outing on Day 3 of the Japan Open Super 750 as PV Sindhu stormed into the quarterfinals with a convincing win. On the other hand, the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto crashed out, leaving the two-time Olympic medallist as the country’s only hope in the tournament.

Sindhu produced one of her best performances of the season as she defeated China’s World No. 5, Han Yue, 21-16, 21-14, in the women’s singles second round. The world No. 10 took a few minutes to settle into the match before taking control with her powerful smashes and consistent rallies.

After winning the first set, Sindhu dominated the second from the start, not allowing her opponent to bounce back in the contest. After this win, Sindhu also improved her head-to-head record against Han Yue to 8-1.

The former world champion will now take on Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the quarterfinals. Okuhara reached the semi-finals after top seeded An Se-young withdrew from the tournament before their second-round match.

Meanwhile, India’s mixed doubles campaign came to an end as Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto lost, 20-22, 17-21, to China’s top-seeded pairing of  Feng Yan Zhe and Huang Dong Ping in the pre-quarterfinals. The Indian pair fought hard throughout the match but could not register the win
