Argentina could face disciplinary action from FIFA after their players celebrated their World Cup semi-final victory over England with a banner supporting the country’s claim over the Falkland Islands.
The defending world champions secured a thrilling 2-1 win over England in Atlanta to reach the World Cup final. However the post-match celebrations have drawn attention after players displayed a banner mentioning “Las Malvinas son Argentinas”, meaning “The Falklands are Argentine.”
The Falkland Islands is a British overseas territory which has been a major reason for a long-running dispute between Britain and Argentina. FIFA has previously punished similar political displays, fining the Argentine Football Association in 2014 after players schowcased the same banner before a friendly against Slovenia.
After the match, Argentina vice-president Victoria Villarruel posted on X, “it wasn’t just another match. The Falklands are Argentine. They banned bringing them to the stadium and forgot that we carry them in our blood and our hearts.”
Ahead of the semi-final, Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni had requested everyone to separate football from politics. “The reality is that this is a football match. I can’t mix things up, especially out of respect for what happened so many years ago,” Scaloni said.
Argentina will now face Spain in the finals of 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 20 in New York.
