Gould insists Rob Key remains the right man for England

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive, Richard Gould, has backed “good communicator” Rob Key to continue as Director of Cricket, reaffirming the board’s faith in him.

Brendon McCullum was relieved of his duties as head coach of the Test team following a string of poor results. This came after the recent home series defeat to New Zealand and Ben Stokes’ retirement.

Questions have continued to be raised over Key’s position in recent weeks. However, speaking at Lord’s on Sunday during the third day of the women’s Test between England and India, Gould made it clear that the ECB remains committed to Key and sees him as a long-term part of its plans.

“He’s got a really good brain,” Gould said, as quoted by Cricinfo. “He’s a good communicator. He has extraordinary knowledge of what goes on within our game in England. And he has spent the last four years in one of the most difficult jobs in English sport. The amount of experience that not only he has amassed, but also others within the team, is really valuable for us.”

Looking ahead, Gould wants Key to make changes that can benefit the team as quickly as possible.

“None of us are immune to results, whether it’s the coach, captain, director of cricket or chief executive. None of us are immune from results. The key is to make sure that whatever changes we make are the ones that are most likely to bring about the quickest improvement in the results we want,” Gould added.
