Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor once again demonstrated why they remain the heartbeat of West Indies women’s cricket. Their commanding centuries against Ireland not only secured the ODI series but also reinforced a debate that has followed the Caribbean side for years: Can West Indies consistently compete with the world’s best while relying so heavily on two players?
The victories in Ireland showcased everything that makes Matthews and Taylor world-class cricketers. But they also exposed a reality that continues to limit the team’s growth. Even when West Indies produce convincing wins, the responsibility, whether with the bat, ball or leadership still rests on their two most experienced all-rounders.
The numbers underlines the extent of that dependence. Matthews has scored 3,560 ODI runs, including 12 centuries, while also claiming 140 wickets in 107 matches. Taylor, meanwhile, has amassed 6,234 runs at an average above 43.29, with 9 ODI centuries and 157 wickets from 178 matches. Together, they are not only the team’s leading run-scorers but also two of its frontline bowlers.
Matthews, as captain, regularly bowls her full quota of overs and remains the tactical leader of the side, while Taylor continues to shoulder significant bowling responsibilities.
The contrast with the rest of the squad is stark. The active batting group outside Matthews and Taylor owns fewer than three ODI centuries combined and collectively averages below 22. The gap in consistency, experience, and match-winning performances underlines West Indies’ continued reliance on the same two players whenever the pressure is on.

In the opening ODI at Bready, Matthews produced one of the finest innings of her career, smashing an unbeaten 159 off 123 deliveries while sharing a record 258-run opening partnership with Realeanna Grimmond. West Indies chased 270 with nine wickets to spare, but the comfortable victory also meant the middle order never came under pressure, leaving its ability to perform in challenging situations largely untested.
The second ODI painted an even clearer picture. Grimmond departed for a duck in the opening over, immediately exposing the vulnerability beneath the top order. What followed was not a collective response from the batting unit but another rescue act orchestrated by Matthews and Taylor. The pair added 158 runs for the second wicket, with Matthews registering her second consecutive century before Taylor remained unbeaten on 104 to complete the chase.
The scorecard tells a compelling story. A single early wicket exposed the batting order, and rather than a middle-order rebuild, West Indies required both of their biggest stars to score centuries in the same innings to chase down 242. Against Ireland, that has produced a 2-0 series lead. Against powerhouses such as Australia, England or India, however, such top-heavy reliance leaves almost no room for error.
This is where West Indies’ greatest challenge lies. Elite sides have consistently targeted Matthews early, knowing her dismissal often disrupts the entire batting line-up. Without experienced middle-order players capable of absorbing pressure, rotating strike and constructing innings, the team struggles to recover once its premier batters depart.
There are reasons for optimism. The return of Deandra Dottin brings invaluable balance as a genuine all-rounder, while Shemaine Campbelle has repeatedly shown she can deliver under pressure. Cricket West Indies has also expanded its central contracts and development pathways in an effort to strengthen the domestic pipeline and produce the next generation of international-quality players.
However, Matthews and Taylor remain two of the finest all-round cricketers in the women’s game, and their brilliance will continue to win matches.
