The ICC is expected to continue its funding support for Afghanistan’s women’s refugee cricket team. The proposal will be discussed at the upcoming ICC Board meeting on Saturday after receiving backing from the BCCI, Cricket Australia and the England and Wales Cricket Board.
The support programme was launched last year for the players who were forced to leave Afghanistan after the Taliban came to power in 2021. The players are now living in Australia, where they train and play domestic cricket. According to BBC Sport, the funding could continue until 2032; however, the final decision is still pending.
The Afghanistan women’s team has also asked the ICC to recognise them as an official international side. Reportedly, a proposal submitted by ICC Women’s Cricket Committee chair Clare Connor will also be discussed at the meeting. It suggests that the team should be allowed to play official international matches.
However, the issue is not straightforward because of the current situation in Afghanistan and the ICC’s relationship with the Afghanistan Cricket Board.
The Afghanistan women’s players recently met ICC chair Jay Shah and other officials during the Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s on 5 July. The ICC has also added a female representative to the task force and plans to include the Pitch Our Future campaign in future discussions to ensure the players’ views are acknowledged.
