India all-rounder Deepti Sharma believes the visitors have posted a competitive first-innings total despite falling short of the 300-run mark on the opening day of the historic first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s. Speaking to the media after stumps, Deepti admitted India left a few runs behind but backed the bowling attack to make early inroads on Day 2.
“Another 20-25 runs would have given us extra cushion”
India were bowled out for 285 after being well placed for a much bigger total, but Deepti felt the score was still enough to challenge England, who finished the day with 21/1 on the board.
“I think 285 is a decent total. Another 20-25 runs would have given us a little more cushion, but it is still a competitive score. The earlier we can take wickets tomorrow, the better it will be for us,” she told reporters.
She also acknowledged the importance of her partnership lower down the order after India’s middle-order lost momentum.
“It feels good because this is a historic Test match for us. We were all very excited from the morning. I’m happy that I could contribute with a partnership at an important stage of the innings.”
Mandhana showed responsibility
Smriti Mandhana top-scored with a fluent 83 in her 300th international appearance, once again falling short of a third Test century. Deepti praised the vice-captain for anchoring the innings after India lost early wickets.
“Smriti batted really well. Sometimes a few wickets fall early and someone has to take responsibility. She showed her character today and built the innings from there. That was really good to see.”
“The wicket offers both turn and variable bounce”
Having spent considerable time in the middle as a batter, Deepti believes the Lord’s surface will continue to challenge batters as the match progresses.
“The wicket is not completely straightforward. Sometimes it is turning and sometimes the ball is keeping a little low. At other times it is bouncing. We have to be prepared for all of that.”
She added that India’s spin attack would have to remain disciplined rather than search for magic deliveries.
“We’ll focus on our bowling strengths. We saw some turn today and there was variable bounce as well. We have to stay mentally strong and keep bowling in the right areas consistently.”
Harmanpreet’s injury not a concern
There were concerns when Harmanpreet Kaur received treatment during her innings, but Deepti played down fears of any serious injury.
“She is okay. It was quite hot out there and she had a little bit of cramp. She’ll be fine.”
Women’s cricket has grown immensely
Reflecting on the significance of playing the first women’s Test at Lord’s, Deepti said the occasion highlighted how far the women’s game has come.
“Test cricket is always special. Playing a Test at Lord’s is an amazing feeling. Women’s cricket has grown immensely over the last four or five years. More people are following the game now, and that’s a big achievement. As a team, we want to continue that progress and inspire the next generation.”
With England ending the day on 21/1, Deepti made India’s approach for Day 2 clear.
“The first hour will be very important. We are looking to build good bowling partnerships and pick up wickets early.”
