During the International Cricket Council (ICC) Annual Conference in Edinburgh on Wednesday, three new Associate Member Directors were elected to the ICC Board. Gurumurthy Palani (France), Mubashshir Usmani (United Arab Emirates) and Dr Rudie van Vuuren (Namibia) emerged victorious in a five-way contest to represent the ICC’s Associate Members. The trio will each serve a two-year term on the global governing body’s Board.
Following the election results, ICC Chairman Jay Shah welcomed the incoming Directors while acknowledging the outgoing members’ extensive contributions to the sport.
“I congratulate Gurumurthy Palani, Mubashshir Usmani and Dr Rudie van Vuuren on their election as Associate Member Directors to the ICC Board,” Shah said in an ICC release. “Associate Members play a vital role in the continued growth and global expansion of our sport, and I look forward to working closely with them as we build on the strong progress being made across all regions.
“I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to Imran Khwaja and Mahinda Vallipuram for their dedication and service to Associate cricket. Their contribution to the ICC and to the development of the global game over many years has been significant and deeply valued. Together, we remain committed to strengthening opportunities for all Members and ensuring cricket continues to grow in every corner of the world.”
While this marks the first time Palani and Dr van Vuuren will join the ICC Board, Usmani was successfully re-elected after serving as a Director over the past two years. The election saw two incumbent Directors, Imran Khwaja and Mahinda Vallipuram, lose their seats.
A total of 43 Associate Members were eligible to cast ballots in the election. Notably absent from the voting process were USA Cricket and Cricket Canada, both of which were ineligible to participate because of their ongoing suspensions from ICC membership.
Palani’s elevation to the Board creates an immediate vacancy elsewhere in the ICC’s governance structure. As he cannot hold both positions simultaneously, a separate election will now be required to fill his former role on the Chief Executives’ Committee.
