India bowling coach Morne Morkel believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has settled seamlessly into the senior setup, but reiterated that the teenager will be given his opportunity at the right time while the team continues to back its established top order.
“I think he’s fitted in very, very well. If you follow the boys on Instagram, there’s already a lot of photos been posted with him, especially just the way the guys have welcomed him,” Morkel told the media on the eve of the second T20I in Manchester. “I think at the nets, as a 15-year-old at the international stage, it can be intimidating, but just the couple of nets we’ve had, it’s been very impressive. We’re all excited to see how he goes and when he gets that opportunity, I’m pretty sure he’ll be ready.”
Referring to Abhishek as the No. 1-ranked T20I batter and highlighting Samson’s performances in major tournaments, he said, “We’ve got the number one batter in T20 cricket, Abhishek Sharma. Sanju had a great IPL. So I think as a coaching staff, it’s only fair to show also the faith and back your players. Yes, there’s a young man knocking on the door and it’s exciting, but I reckon for not just those two players at the top, but for the rest of the group, it’s a good sign that we show that we back you guys.” Morkel mentioned.
Morkel also expressed confidence in India’s pace attack, praising Harshit Rana for the way he has returned after a lengthy lay-off and Prince Yadav for continuing his rapid rise.
“The way he’s come back after a lengthy lay-off has been very, very good. Prince has done exceptionally well,” Morkel stated.
Recalling his association with Prince at Lucknow Super Giants, Morkel highlighted: “I’m just blown away by how calm he keeps things… He’s also a guy that’s always, every session, looking for ways to improve his game and make himself better… how he reads the play, what decisions he makes under pressure and then executing that, for me, it’s great to see.”
With the England series underway, Morkel said India had already shown “progress” in adapting to the conditions, adding, “I thought we did that very well up in Durham and hopefully that can continue down in the series.”
