ICC Confirms Qualification Pathway for Cricket’s Olympic Return

India vs Australia (PC: ICC)

The International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) have announced the qualification pathway for cricket in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Six teams each will be competing in both the men’s and women’s T20 categories. ICC and IOA together introduced a new process to finalise the teams.

Top five teams in each event will qualify automatically through ICC rankings and all the existing ICC tournaments. Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania will at least have one representative to ensure that all four regions are represented at the Games.

The ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has already confirmed the first four women’s teams for LA28. Australia, Great Britain, India and South Africa secured there places as they are the highest ranked eligible teams from their respective continents.

The USA have an advantage in the race of qualification as host nation in both events but they will only qualify if their men’s and women’s teams are in the top 15 of the ICC T20I rankings during the qualification period. If any team fails to meet that requirement, the spot will go to the next highest ranked eligible nation.

The West Indies on the other hand cannot compete at the Olympics because they are not recognised as a single National Olympic Committee. However, even if they finish among the top-ranked teams, a Caribbean qualifying event will decide which nation from their region will move to the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

ICC Olympic qualifiers will be played among eight teams in 2027 who will decide the final spot in both categories.
