Kambala to make debut at Mysuru Dasara celebrations this year

Published:

Mysuru: The world-famous Mysuru Dasara celebrations are set to feature Kambala for the first time this year, with the traditional buffalo race being introduced as a special cultural attraction ahead of the annual festival.

Officials announced that the Kambala event will be organised as a prelude to Dasara, around three months before the main festivities, with preparations already under way to host the coastal Karnataka sport on a grand scale.

Officials begin preparations for inaugural event

The decision was discussed at a preparatory meeting chaired by Mysuru Deputy Commissioner G. Lakshmikanth Reddy, who directed officials to identify a suitable venue measuring not less than seven acres for the event.

The Deputy Commissioner instructed officials to shortlist land at Vijayanagar First Stage, Vijayanagar Fourth Stage or near Sathagalli along the Mysuru Ring Road.

The selected venue is expected to accommodate buffalo enclosures, spectator galleries and parking facilities, keeping in mind the large turnout anticipated for the inaugural edition of the event.

Officials said the arrangements would be planned meticulously to ensure the smooth conduct of the traditional sport and provide a memorable experience for spectators.

Kambala to add cultural flavour to Dasara

The inclusion of Kambala in the Mysuru Dasara calendar is aimed at showcasing one of Karnataka’s most celebrated traditional sports on a larger cultural platform.

Kambala, a traditional buffalo race that originated in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, has gained popularity across the state in recent years and has increasingly been showcased beyond its traditional boundaries.

By introducing Kambala as part of the Dasara celebrations, the administration hopes to promote Karnataka’s rich cultural heritage and offer visitors a unique experience ahead of the grand festivities.

Officials believe the event will also strengthen cultural ties between the coastal and southern regions of the state by bringing one of coastal Karnataka’s most iconic traditions to Mysuru.

Nodal officer appointed for coordination

Mysuru Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Yukesh Kumar has been appointed as the nodal officer for the event and will coordinate all arrangements related to the conduct of the Kambala.

The preparatory meeting was attended by Zilla Panchayat CEO Yukesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police Mallikarjuna Baladandi, Karnataka State Kambala Association General Secretary Vijay Kumar, Bengaluru Kambala Working President Muralidhar Rai and Jayasurya Rai, among others.

The officials discussed various logistical requirements, including venue selection, infrastructure, crowd management, parking arrangements and other facilities necessary for organising the event successfully.

New attraction expected to draw large crowds

The addition of Kambala is expected to become a major attraction during this year’s Dasara season, drawing enthusiasts from across Karnataka and neighbouring states.

Mysuru Dasara, renowned for its cultural programmes, processions and royal traditions, attracts lakhs of visitors every year. Officials believe the inclusion of Kambala will further enhance the festival’s appeal and provide a new dimension to the celebrations.

More details regarding the schedule and venue of the event are expected to be announced in the coming weeks after the finalisation of arrangements.
