DC warned over Pant-Kuldeep swap deal

Published:

New Delhi: Delhi Capitals have been cautioned against making what could be one of the most controversial moves in recent Indian Premier League history, amid reports of a potential player swap involving Rishabh Pant and Kuldeep Yadav.

According to reports, the Capitals are considering a trade deal with Lucknow Super Giants that would see Pant return to Delhi, while Kuldeep moves in the opposite direction. The development has sparked debate, with former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif strongly opposing the move.

Pant’s struggles raise questions

Rishabh Pant has endured a difficult phase in his career, struggling to deliver consistent performances in both international cricket and the IPL. After being bought by Lucknow Super Giants for a record Rs 27 crore ahead of IPL 2025, Pant failed to justify his price tag.

His stint as captain also came under scrutiny, and following IPL 2026, Pant stepped down from the leadership role. Reports suggest that he may even accept a pay cut as part of the proposed move back to Delhi.

Kaif backs Kuldeep, warns DC

Mohammad Kaif has come out firmly in support of Kuldeep Yadav, warning Delhi Capitals that trading the spinner would be a major error.

“If Delhi Capitals send Kuldeep to LSG, there cannot be a bigger mistake than this,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

He emphasized that a player should not be judged based on a single poor season and highlighted Kuldeep’s long-term contributions.

“You don’t judge a player who has been performing for years on the basis of one season. Look at his record after joining Delhi—he has delivered consistently,” Kaif added.

‘Back your match-winners’

Kaif also pointed out that Kuldeep has often been unfairly treated, citing instances where he was dropped quickly during lean patches, both in the IPL and for the Indian team.

“It becomes very difficult for a bowler like him if you don’t back him. He is often the first to be dropped. Players of his skill are rare, and you need to support them during tough times,” he said.

He further stressed that Delhi’s struggles cannot be pinned on one individual.

“Delhi did not lose because of Kuldeep alone. There were multiple issues. Blaming one player and letting him go would be the biggest mistake,” Kaif noted.

Big decision looms for Delhi

Kuldeep Yadav, who earns Rs 13.25 crore with Delhi Capitals, has been one of the team’s key performers in recent seasons despite a dip in form.

As speculation grows over the potential trade, the Capitals management faces a crucial decision that could shape the team’s future. Bringing Pant back may add star power, but letting go of a proven match-winner like Kuldeep could come at a significant cost.

With the IPL known for bold moves and unexpected trades, all eyes will now be on Delhi Capitals to see whether they proceed with the deal or heed the warnings from former players.
