Guwahati, 19th June: A 24-year-old Bangladeshi woman was arrested at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI) in Guwahati for allegedly residing and working in India illegally using forged identity documents, police officials said.
According to police sources, the woman arrived at the airport from Bengaluru on an Air India flight at around 7:45 PM on June 16. She had travelled to Assam to meet her male friend, who had previously worked with her in Bengaluru.
Airport security personnel became suspicious of her movements and questioned her. During the interrogation, inconsistencies were found in her statements, prompting a detailed verification of her identity. She later allegedly admitted to being a Bangladeshi national.
Following preliminary questioning, she was handed over to the Assam Police Border Branch for further investigation. The probe revealed that she had allegedly entered India illegally in 2024 through the India-Bangladesh border in Tripura with the help of a broker based in Agartala.
Police said she travelled from Tripura to Bengaluru via Guwahati by train and was employed at a private company in Bengaluru. Investigators also found that she had allegedly obtained and used a fake Aadhaar card in the name of “Pooja Das,” which carried an address in South Dinajpur district of West Bengal. The document was allegedly used for her stay, travel and employment in India.
Police are now investigating the network involved in facilitating illegal border crossings and preparing forged identity documents. Further investigation into the case is underway.
