The Netherlands head coach Neil Macrae was quick to acknowledge the gulf in experience between the two sides after his team suffered a 95-run defeat to India at Headingley. Yet, while the scoreboard reflected a one-sided result, Macrae believed there were enough positives to take into the remainder of the tournament.
“India Will Have A Chance To Win This Tournament”
Macrae began by congratulating India and explaining why Harmanpreet Kaur’s team proved too strong.
“They showed why they won the (50-over) World Cup last year,” he said. “The experience and consistency you expect from players who have played at the highest level for a long time was evident today.”
The Netherlands coach went a step further, backing India as genuine contenders for another global title.
“We came into this tournament ranked 12th. India will have a chance to win this tournament. They’ll be there at the end fighting with the main countries in the world.”
Finding Positives Despite The Defeat
Although India crossed 200, Macrae felt the margin did not fully reflect how competitive the contest had been at various stages.
He praised contributions from Heather Siegers and the middle-order, while also highlighting the way his side fought back with the ball after India’s dominant start.
“At one point they could have been looking at 230 or 240. We fought back in the last six or seven overs and that spirit is something this team prides itself on.”
Macrae also pointed to discipline with the ball as an area for improvement after the Netherlands conceded a number of wides that inflated India’s total.
Lessons Ahead Of Australia
The challenge does not get any easier, with Australia next on the schedule.
Macrae stressed that his players must learn to sustain good periods for longer against elite opposition.
“At this level, it’s not enough to do it for a few balls or a couple of overs. We have to keep repeating our basic skills for longer.”
He added that his batters needed to be brave enough to attack scoring opportunities early against world-class bowling attacks.
The Associate Nation Challenge
Perhaps the most revealing part of the press conference came when Macrae spoke about the journey that brought the Netherlands to their first Women’s T20 World Cup.
“For what the girls have had to overcome as an Associate nation and a minority sport in the Netherlands, reaching a World Cup is an incredible achievement in itself.”
Macrae reserved special praise for leg-spinner Caroline de Lange, who dismissed Smriti Mandhana and has picked up two wickets in each of the Netherlands’ opening games.
“She’s committed a lot to cricket and that wicket will live long in the memory of Dutch supporters.”
For Macrae, the defeat was less about the result and more about the lessons his players can take from sharing the field with one of the tournament favourites.
