India A have effectively qualified for the tri-series final in Sri Lanka with a superior net run rate after defeating Afghanistan A by 101 runs at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Wednesday.
The result took India A to four points from as many matches, with a net run rate of +0.597. Sri Lanka A also have four points with a net run rate of +0.494, while Afghanistan A remain on two points, and a net run rate of -1.602.
Batting first, India A posted 319/9 in 50 overs. Priyansh Arya provided the early impetus with 58 off 42 balls, including nine fours and a six. He and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 38 off 28 deliveries, added 80 runs for the opening wicket.
Ruturaj Gaikwad contributed 30 before captain Tilak Varma top-scored with 59 from 75 balls. Kumar Kushagra also made 58, helping India A through the middle overs.
Further contributions came from Vipraj Nigam, who scored 30 off 20 balls, and Nishant Sindhu, who remained unbeaten on 21. India A also received 14 extras.
For Afghanistan A, Abdollah Ahmadzai, Faridoon Dawoodzai and Farmanullah claimed two wickets each, while Zahir Khan picked up one wicket.
In reply, Afghanistan A were bowled out for 218 in 36.5 overs. Bahir Shah top-scored with 57, while Faisal Shinozada made 46.
Nishant Sindhu led India’s bowling efforts with figures of 4 for 31 in 6.5 overs. Yash Thakur picked up 2 for 48 as Afghanistan A were dismissed with 13.1 overs remaining in the chase.
The victory was India A’s second win in the tournament, concluding their league-stage campaign. The 101-run margin vastly improved their net run rate, effectively securing Tilak Varma’s side a place in the tri-series final.
