France began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal in their Group I opener at MetLife Stadium. While Kylian Mbappe grabbed the headlines with two goals, Didier Deschamps deserve equal credit for the tactical changes that transformed the game after halftime.

France, who have entered the tournament as one of the favourites, struggled to find rhythm in the opening 45 minutes. Senegal matched them physically and looked more threatening for large periods of the first half.

Nicolas Jackson nearly stunned the French supporters before the hydration break. After Pape Gueye won possession from Mbappe, he released Jackson with a through pass. The striker drove into the box and fired at goal, but the effort struck the near post and bounced off Mike Maignan before going for a corner.

France’s star-studded attack of Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue and Michael Olise failed to create clear openings in the first half, managing just one shot on target. Senegal almost took the lead just before the break when Sadio Mane’s cross found Ismaila Sarr, but the forward failed to hit the target from close range.

The game changed after halftime.

Deschamps moved Olise into a more central role and shifted Dembele wider, giving the Bayern Munich playmaker greater freedom between the lines. The adjustment immediately paid dividends.

Olise began dictating the tempo and creating chances. He first burst into the box only to be denied by Eduard Mendy. Minutes later, he released Mbappe inside the area, and after a challenge from Mane, France appealed for a penalty. Following a VAR review, the referee waved play on.

France finally broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Olise delivered a precise through from the right, beating three players, and finding Mbappe inside the box. The captain controlled calmly and finished past Mendy to put France ahead.

Deschamps’ second substitution also proved decisive. Bradley Barcola replaced Dembele and made an immediate impact. Within two minutes, the PSG winger doubled France’s lead after latching onto Adrien Rabiot’s perfectly weighted through ball and finishing confidently.

Senegal managed a late consolation through Ibrahim Mbaye in stoppage time, denying France a clean sheet, but it did little to change the outcome. Mbappe then put the result beyond doubt with a stunning strike from distance in the dying minutes beating a fully stretched Mendy to score his second goal of the night.

The brace took Mbappe’s World Cup tally to 14 goals, moving him closer to Miroslav Klose’s all-time record of 16.

For France, it was a performance that underlined why they remain among the favourites to lift the trophy. After a difficult first half, Deschamps’ tactical adjustments and Mbappe’s finishing quality ensured the two-time world champions opened their campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory.
