A few days ago, concern spread rapidly among Argentina supporters when Lionel Messi walked off during an Inter Miami game holding his hamstring. The anxiety only grew when head coach Lionel Scaloni decided not to use his captain in the warm-up match against Honduras. During recent training sessions, Giuliano Simeone was used at right-back, while Lisandro Martínez featured on the left side of defence. Cristian Romero and veteran Nicolás Otamendi are expected to continue as the central defensive pairing.
In midfield, Rodrigo De Paul, Enzo Fernández and Alexis Mac Allister look certain starters, while Messi and Lautaro Martínez are expected to lead the attack.
Argentina’s biggest challenge before kick-off may not be Algeria but the intense American summer heat. To prepare for the conditions, the coaching staff have deliberately scheduled training sessions under the strongest afternoon sun.
This World Cup is widely being described as Messi’s “Last Dance”. But watching the mood around Argentina’s camp and the meticulous planning of Scaloni, it feels less like a farewell tour and more like the beginning of another chapter.
