FIFA World Cup 2026: Doku Availability in Doubt for World Cup Knockout Stages

Belgium could be without one of their key players if they reach the latter stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with winger Jeremy Doku likely to leave the squad during the quarter-final phase of the tournament.

The 24-year-old left winger, expected to be a key figure in Belgium’s campaign, has indicated that he would prioritise the birth of his first child, which is scheduled for the second week of July.

Doku has scored seven goals in 42 appearances for the national team since making his debut in 2020.

Belgium’s attack is heavily reliant on Doku, particularly after his impressive performances in the Premier League for Manchester City.

The timing of his paternity leave is likely to coincide with the World Cup quarter-finals, raising the possibility that Belgium may have to navigate a crucial knockout match without one of their biggest attacking threats.

Doku acknowledged that balancing personal commitments and international football is not straightforward, but suggested that discussions are already taking place with the Belgian Football Federation regarding the situation.

According to Belgian media reports, arrangements are being considered to transport the winger back to England if required, potentially leaving Belgium without his services at a decisive stage of the tournament.

Belgium are in Group G alongside Iran, Egypt and New Zealand. They will begin their campaign against Egypt on June 16 (IST).
