Sri Lanka A defeated India A in a Super Over in the Tri-Nation A Series on Monday, with the match ending in a confrontation involving India opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
India A posted 265 after half-centuries from Suryansh Shedge and Vipraj Nigam helped the visitors recover from early setbacks. Sri Lanka A matched the total to force a Super Over.
The closing stages of the match, played under fading light, saw discussions between India A captain Tilak Varma and the match officials before the Super Over. Visibility remained a point of concern as the tie-breaker got underway.
Sri Lanka A scored 16 runs in the Super Over, leaving India A needing 17 for victory.
During the chase, a no-ball review referred to the third umpire added further tension to the contest. India A were unable to chase down the target as Sri Lanka A sealed the victory.
Shortly after the final ball, players from both teams became involved in a heated exchange.
Videos circulating on social media showed Sooryavanshi at the centre of the incident as players gathered near the pitch during Sri Lanka A’s celebrations. Reports suggested that Vishen Halambage was pushed by Sooryavanshi as the players were leaving the field.
There had already been verbal exchanges between players during the closing stages of the match before tensions spilled over into the post-match proceedings.
No official statement on the incident had been released at the time of writing.
The result moved Sri Lanka A to the top of the standings with two wins from two matches. India A now face a crucial fixture against Afghanistan A as they look to keep their hopes of reaching the final alive.
