Bhutan batter Ritshi Choden created an unwanted record by becoming the first woman cricketer to be dismissed timed out in international cricket during a Women’s T20I match against Nepal in the ACC Women’s Premier Cup in Malaysia on Thursday.
The rare dismissal occurred after opener Ngawang Chodenwas out for a golden duck. With Bhutan chasing 114, the team had slumped to 0 for 1.
The dismissal sparked debate after the match, prompting the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) to apologise. In its statement, CAN said the dismissal was legal but also acknowledged that it did not reflect the “spirit of the game”.
The incident took place when Ritshi took more than 90 seconds to reach the crease following the fall of the first wicket. Under cricket laws, the next batter must be ready to face the ball within the specified time limit. After the delay, Nepal’s players appealed to the umpires.
Umpires Sun Meng Yao and Ankita Guha upheld the appeal and declared Choden out. Before the decision was announced, Nepal player Puja Mahato was seen speaking to the umpire, after which the fielding side celebrated the wicket.
Ritshi accepted the decision without protest and walked back to the pavilion. The unusual dismissal left Bhutan struggling at the start of the innings, and they eventually finished on 62/8 in their 20 overs as Nepal maintained pressure throughout the match.
