Six bowlers, including pacers Auqib Nabi and Prince Yadav, will assist Team India in their preparations for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh.
Apart from those two, Gurjapneet Singh and spinners Shivang Kumar, Saransh Jain and Zeeshan Ansari will work closely with the squad during the training camp.
Nabi got this opportunity after a stunning domestic season with Jammu and Kashmir. The right-arm pacer was one of the contenders for a spot in India’s Test squad after playing a key role in his team’s historic Ranji Trophy triumph this year. In that tournament, Nabi was the highest wicket-taker with 60 wickets at an impressive average of 12.56, which earned him the Player of the Tournament award.
Despite his strong performances, the selectors did not include him in the final Test squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the reason behind this, saying, “You do not necessarily pick a lot of seamers when you pick a Test team in India. And he was close. But at this point, we have gone with the three that we have picked.”
Prince, on the other hand, has already earned a place in India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against Afghanistan, which will be played after the Test match.
The inclusion of young bowlers in the training setup reflects the selectors’ confidence in the youngsters and will also help them gain valuable experience alongside the national team.
This is the second time Afghanistan will face India in a Test match. Previously, India hosted Afghanistan in 2018, a match that was won by the hosts.
The two sides will meet on June 6 in New Chandigarh.
