Hyderabad, 2nd June: Tension gripped Telangana’s Narayanpet town on Tuesday after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and a right-wing organisation called for a bandh following the suicide of a teenage girl, alleging that she had been deceived and pressured to change her religion by a youth from another community.
Police said the accused, identified as 18-year-old Fasiuddin, has been arrested and remanded to judicial custody. A case has been registered against him under charges of abetment to suicide and various provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
The bandh affected normal life in the town, with several shops and commercial establishments remaining shut. BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leaders and activists gathered near the Narayanpet Regional Transport Depot and attempted to block bus services before police intervened and detained several protesters.
Authorities stepped up security arrangements and conducted patrols in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.
Right-wing organisations alleged that the incident was part of what they described as a pattern targeting Hindu girls. They claimed the accused had gained the trust of the victim and her family by promising marriage before allegedly pressuring her to convert.
Senior BJP leader Nagurao Namaji alleged that the teenager had been misled and later subjected to coercion and blackmail.
“In Narayanpet, Hindu girls are being trapped and misled. The accused allegedly promised to support the girl and marry her, but later pressured her to convert and marry according to Muslim customs,” Namaji claimed.
He demanded a comprehensive investigation into the case and strict action against all those found responsible.
“A thorough investigation must be conducted, and strict action taken against anyone found involved. We want justice for the girl and assurance that such incidents do not happen again,” he said.
Protesters also demanded a speedy investigation, stringent punishment for the accused if found guilty, and stronger safeguards to protect young women from exploitation.
Police officials, however, said the allegations made by protesters have not been verified and cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is completed.
“The matter is under investigation. We appeal to the public not to spread rumours or unverified information,” a police official said.
Authorities said the situation remained under control and adequate security measures were in place to ensure peace in the town as the investigation continues.
