India’s Unity Cup 2026 campaign ended in disappointment after a 1-0 defeat to Zimbabwe in the third-place playoff at The Valley in London on Saturday.
A first-half penalty from Prince Dube proved enough to separate the two sides as the Blue Tigers finished fourth in the four-nation tournament after losses to both Jamaica and Zimbabwe.
Khalid Jamil’s side entered the contest without injured forward Ryan Williams and struggled to create clear-cut chances throughout the evening. While India enjoyed spells of possession, they lacked the cutting edge required to trouble a physically strong Zimbabwe outfit packed with players from top European leagues.
The opening stages were evenly contested, although Zimbabwe looked the more threatening side whenever they moved forward. Sandesh Jhingan was forced into an early intervention to clear a dangerous cross, while Navaya tested the Indian defence with his movement in and around the box.
India’s best moments in the first half came through Vikram and Lallianzuala Chhangte on the flanks, but the final ball was often missing. Rahul Bheke’s long throw-ins caused some discomfort, yet Zimbabwe’s defenders dealt comfortably with most deliveries into the area.
The breakthrough arrived in the 32nd minute. After a sustained spell of possession, Zimbabwe worked the ball into the Indian penalty area where Navaya was brought down by Farukh Choudhary. Referee pointed straight to the spot, and Dube calmly sent Gurpreet Singh Sandhu the wrong way to put the Warriors ahead.
The goal exposed India’s attacking struggles. Despite fielding Chhangte, Vikram and Rahim Ali in advanced positions, the Blue Tigers failed to register a meaningful effort on target before the break.
India showed greater urgency after halftime. Chhangte came closest to an equaliser in the 60th minute when his powerful strike from the edge of the box beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the post. It was the clearest chance of the match for the Blue Tigers.
Zimbabwe continued to threaten on the counter, with Maroodza forcing a sharp save from Gurpreet while substitute Chirewa injected energy into their attack.
Jamil responded with changes, introducing Jeakson Singh, Edmund Lalrindika and Sanan Mohammed in search of a goal. The substitutes helped India push higher up the pitch, and the pressure nearly paid off late on. In the 86th minute, Vikram delivered an inviting cross into the six-yard box, but Edmund was inches away from making contact.
That miss summed up India’s evening.
Despite a spirited finish, the equaliser never arrived as Zimbabwe held firm to secure the bronze medal. For India, the tournament ends with back-to-back defeats and several questions to answer.
