Former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has emerged as the highest taxpayer in the Jharkhand-Bihar region as the Income Tax Department reported record direct tax collections exceeding Rs 20,000 crore during the financial year 2025-26.
According to officials, the Income Tax Department’s Jharkhand-Bihar region registered a strong rise in tax revenue driven by improved compliance, higher corporate earnings, expanding businesses, and increased voluntary disclosures. The achievement marks a significant milestone for the department as collections witnessed substantial year-on-year growth.
MS Dhoni, who hails from Ranchi, reportedly contributed the highest amount among individual taxpayers in the region. The former captain continues to earn through multiple business ventures, endorsements, investments, and brand associations even after retiring from international cricket.
Tax authorities stated that both salaried taxpayers and business entities played a major role in boosting collections during FY26. Growth in mining, infrastructure, manufacturing, and services sectors across Jharkhand and Bihar also supported the rise in direct tax revenues.
Officials highlighted that digital monitoring systems, improved filing mechanisms, and awareness campaigns helped enhance tax compliance among individuals and corporations. The department has also intensified action against tax evasion and undisclosed income, contributing to higher collections.
MS Dhoni remains one of India’s most marketable sports personalities and continues to maintain strong commercial value through endorsements and investments in sectors including sports, agriculture, fitness, and hospitality. His position as the highest taxpayer reflects both his financial success and contribution toward the country’s revenue system.
The Income Tax Department is optimistic about sustaining the growth momentum in the coming fiscal year, supported by expanding economic activity and increasing taxpayer participation across eastern India.
