From Calgary to the Cosmos: Young Prodigy Pratham Shukla Wins Big at Canada’s Prestigious Science Fair
A News365 Times Special Feature | Inspiring Young India Across Borders
In a remarkable achievement that blends scientific curiosity, innovation, and global excellence, Master Pratham Shukla, a Grade 7 student based in Calgary, Canada, has brought laurels by winning a prestigious award at the Calgary Youth Science Fair (CYSF)—one of the largest and most competitive science fairs in the country.
Competing among over 600 projects and 900 participants, Pratham stood out with his project titled:
“Analysing Space Weather Risk”
Decoding Space Threats from the Sun
Pratham’s project focused on Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs)—massive bursts of solar plasma emitted from the Sun that have the potential to disrupt Earth’s technological infrastructure.
These solar phenomena pose serious risks such as:
- Disruption of satellite communications
- Damage to GPS systems
- Power grid failures on Earth
What sets Pratham apart is his forward-thinking approach—he explored ways to predict CME behaviour, a step toward safeguarding global communication systems and space-based infrastructure.

Recognition at a Global Platform
For his outstanding work, Pratham received:
- A Mathematical Excellence Award
- A cash prize of $500 (approx. ₹30,000)
This recognition at CYSF reflects not just academic brilliance, but also early-stage scientific leadership.
A Strong Foundation of Support
Pratham humbly acknowledges the guidance and encouragement of his parents, along with the inspiration drawn from his grandparents, including Mohan Shukla.
Such a strong ecosystem of mentorship and values continues to shape young minds into global achievers.
