Surat, 2nd June: At least six people were killed and more than 20 others injured after a Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus caught fire following a collision with another government bus near Uva village in Gujarat’s Surat district on Tuesday.

According to police, the accident occurred on a highway near Bardoli after 4 pm when two Maharashtra government buses collided. The impact reportedly caused one of the buses to lose control, cross the divider and enter the opposite carriageway before bursting into flames.

Surat Rural Police later confirmed that six passengers lost their lives in the incident. Officials said over 20 injured passengers were rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Most of the passengers travelling in the buses are believed to be residents of Maharashtra.

Surat Rural Superintendent of Police Rajesh Gadhvi and Range Inspector General Premveer Singh said rescue operations were immediately launched following the crash, with the priority being to save passengers and ensure prompt medical care for the injured.

Fire brigade teams rushed to the spot after receiving information about the accident and worked to bring the blaze under control. Police personnel, rescue workers and local residents joined efforts to evacuate passengers trapped inside the damaged buses.

Authorities said the bus that caught fire suffered extensive damage, making it difficult to immediately assess the full extent of casualties.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as flames engulfed the vehicle while injured passengers waited for assistance along the roadside.

Visuals from the scene showed thick smoke billowing from the burning bus as emergency responders carried out rescue operations.

Police have secured the accident site and initiated an investigation into the cause of the collision. Traffic movement in the area was temporarily affected as rescue and firefighting operations continued.

Officials said the exact circumstances leading to the accident are being examined, and further details are expected after completion of the investigation.
