With just 10 days left before the 2026 Commonwealth Games begins, Glasgow is set to welcome around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories for an 11-day sporting celebration from July 23 to August 2.

The CGW returns to the Scottish city for the first time since 2014 which will bring together world-class athletes with a fresh competition format. India have named a strong list of contingent which will be led by Olympic medallists Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain.

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games will feature only 10 sports, nine sports fewer than the 2022 edition in Birmingham. The competition will be held across four venues within an eight-mile corridor which makes Glasgow 2026 one of the most compact editions in the event’s history.

Athletics, swimming, 3×3 basketball, track cycling, weightlifting, lawn bowls, artistic gymnastics, netball, boxing and judo are the featured sports in this edition.

India will send a 191-member contingent, including para-athletes, as they will aim to build on the 61 medals they won at Birmingham 2022.

India’s athletics team is expected to attract plenty of attention, with the former Commonwealth champion Neeraj Chopra leading the squad. The team also includes national record holders and international medallists such as Gurindervir Singh, Animesh Kujur and Murali Sreeshankar.

The opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro on July 23 will be attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla. Sir Chris Hoy, one of Scotland’s greatest athletes, will also be part of the ceremony after carrying the first King’s Baton during the relay launched at Buckingham Palace.

Speaking ahead of the event, Sir Chris said: “It is an absolute honour to attend the opening of Glasgow 2026 with the King and Queen. A home Games is always a special occasion and I have so many wonderful memories from competing in the Commonwealth Games myself. I have no doubt the city of Glasgow will yet again be a superb host to what promises to be an exciting event and I very much look forward to being a part of it,” as quoted by the BBC.

Glasgow 2026 Chair George Black CBE added: “Welcoming the King and Queen to the Hydro is a proud moment for everyone building the opening ceremony. We set out to make something bold, unmistakably Glasgow and unlike anything the Commonwealth Games has produced before. To have their Majesties there to see it come to life makes it all the more special.”
